Dana Dawson Award

The Dana Dawson award honors one of the long-time members of the Capital City FSC. It is awarded to the highest placing young skater of the recall event. The inaugural Dana Dawson award was presented to Capital City FSC member Bella Martinez in 2007.

Many of the winners of this prestigious young skater award have reached the highest levels of skating, including the 2017 US Figure Skating Ladies Champion Karen Chen (2008). Bella Martinez (2007) is one of only 30 skaters to pass the ISI Freestyle 10 test and is a US Figure Skating gold medalist. Sarah Zhang (2011) is a quadruple US Figure Skating gold medalist and National Solo Dance Series Champion.

​Dana Dawson was a member of the Capital City Figure Skating Club beginning in 1952. She began to frequent Iceland Ice Rink in 1946, shortly after moving to West Sacramento with her husband, Harlan. Dana grew up in Presque Isle, Maine, where she skated using hockey skates on the frozen ponds and streams in -10 degree weather near the Canadian border. “You were considered to be a good skater if you could go forward and backward,” Dana said. “I could do both growing up, so people thought I was a good skater.”

After settling in the Sacramento area, Dana took lessons at Iceland from Bill Kerth who always made sure his students’ jackets were zipped up and their boot laces tucked in. Billy, as he was affectionately known, told Dawson and the rest of his students, “Even if you’re not professionals, you’re going to look like professionals.” It was Kerth who told Mrs. Dawson that she needed to start wearing figure skates and that she could “use the hockey skate blades to wipe the mud off by your front door.”

Dana passed her Preliminary Figures test in 1953 and still has a punch card for patch ice that cost $4.50 for ten sessions! She participated in the club show in 1964, and she and her husband Harlan also took winter vacations to Yosemite and Echo Lake, where they enjoyed skating outdoors together.

One of their two daughters, Debbie, also took a liking to the ice and skated at Iceland alongside her mother. Debbie also designed and sewed Dana’s skating dresses. Mrs. Dawson last donned a pair of skates at the age of 70, when she spent the day at the outdoor holiday rink in downtown Sacramento.

“Skating means so much to me. I’ve always loved figure skating and feel honored to have been able to do it for so long,” Dawson said. “I also feel so honored to have my name on an award presented to an outstanding young skater….particularly while I’m still around to enjoy it.”

Dana passed away on October 20, 2009 at the age of 91, and is missed and cherished by the members of Capital City FSC.

Bill Kerth Award

The Capital City Figure Skating Club is also pleased to honor a man of great influence to the club at this years Gold Rush Showcase on Ice with the Bill Kerth Award.

Bill Kerth has been involved with Capital City Figure Skating Club since its beginning. In fact, he taught Dana Dawson at Iceland.

​Because of his continued support and contributions to the club, Capital City FSC is honored to present this award to the highest placing adult-event skater in the recall event.
